Behind Bars //
Eduquip Motorcycle School was borne out of a passion and hobby centered around Gordon Sherwood's love of being in the breeze free from a tin cage. Gordon started riding from a young age on his step brothers farm, promptly burying the little VanVan 90cc into the hedge. This did not deter Gordon in the slightest at every opportunity he climbed on a bike. A stint of farming reinforced the love of two wheels before he joined the RNZ Navy. At 15 yrs old he obtained his motorcycle licence and after doing a prescribed course of 12 weeks the Full class 6 licence was issued. His first bike was a brand new 1982 GSX250EZ at the age of 16, that saw a greater part of the North Island from the vantage point of two wheels. After a major off and having been recently engaged he decided to quit the bike, but once married to Beth the call of the wind was too strong and a 1980 Honda XR500 took the centre spot in the garage.
Gordon has pretty much been an everyday rider, rain hail snow and shine literally, covering the whole of our fantastic country on two wheels including a couple of Rusty Nuts "Grand Challenge" rides that take in 1000miles within a 24hr period. Several bikes later and some significant offs including a "head on" the oportunity in 2009 to turn a passion into a hobby presented itself that could not be turned down, So Gordon became a Motorcycle Basic Handling Skills Testing Assessor approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency working out the REAP office in Whakatane.
In training new riders Gordon is unfazed and calmly brings the best out of people to acheive their goal of freedom as he learnt the hard way and survived more by good luck than good management, he is keen to help others learn without making the same mistakes as he did making the experience one to be enjoyed rather than faced with trepidation. Literally thousands of clients have been assessed over the years , competent to start to learn to ride. In 2015 the NZTA introduced the CBTA (Compentency Based Testing Assesment) for motorcyle licences, needless to say another oportunity to be grasped was taken advantage of that now saw Gordon being able to offer Restricted 6R and Full 6F licences to his clients. Another oportunity presented to be able to offer the ACC funded Ride Forever Full Day Courses now added to the services that Gordon now offers. In 2016 Gordon was again to accept another offer that this time saw the passion that became a hobby explode into a full time employment opportunity, saying goodby to a 50+ hour week and a boss.
Eduquip Motorcycle School is now its own fully fledged business operating from their existing business, Eduquip Ltd Kawerau Stationery at 23 Jellicoe Court Kawerau.
